What if I use benzos on top of my treatment?
Benzos are potentially lethal in combination with all drugs used in opiate replacement treatment and should never be used without medical advice. The combination of benzos and opiates is one of the most common to be found in drug-related deaths. If you are addicted to benzos and are finding it impossible to stop using, then you should discuss this with your doctor – under very special circumstances, it may be possible for you to be prescribed some safer doses of longer acting benzos to help you stabilise your use. You would then receive help to withdraw from benzos.
Occasionally, doctors may prescribe you low doses of benzos for other reasons during your maintenance treatment. If this is your usual doctor, then this should be perfectly safe. If this is not your usual doctor, please be sure to let them know about your opiate replacement treatment.
